Home Assistant: Configuration - Samba Share / Samba Backup

The Samba Share add-on allows the sharing of files in Home Assistant from other MacOS / Windows computers using the SMB protocol. The Samba Backup add-on allows backups of the Home Assistant configuration to an external drive using SMB; in this case to the TITAN NAS.

Install Samba Share

  • Add Samba Share (GitHub)
    • Settings -> Add-Ons, click Add-On Store
    • Find Samba share, select and click Install
    • Click on Configuration tab, set password = [STRONGBOX], click Save
    • Back on Info tab, press Start

To access from Mac

  • Use to access config.yaml, /local/images/…
  • On Mac go to Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server…
    • Enter IP address of Home Assistant server: e.g. 192.168.0.21
    • Enter username and password as above

Install Samba Backup<

  • Add Samba Backup (GitHub)
    • Go to HACS -> Add-ons; goes off to HASS add-ons page, click on Add-on Store
    • At top RHS three-dots, select Repositories
      • Copy repository link from Samba Backup GitHub page = [https://github.com/thomasmauerer/hassio-addons], paste and click Add
      • When “Tom’s HA Add-ons” added close popup
    • Refresh browser, search for Samba Backup, select, then click Install
    • Once installed click on new tab Configuration at top of page
      • Enter details for TITAN:
        • 192.168.0.10 -> Public -> ha_backup_files -> bob -> PW (StrongBox) -> defaults
        • TODO: replace with user = homeassistant and own password
      • Click Save
    • On Info tab, press Start [check log for start-up ok]

Check backups on TITAN

  • Go to TITAN -> Public -> ha_backup_files
  • Confirm existence of Samba_Backup_[datetime].tar files
